I guess South West is really North?!?!

I used this application (after reading AND fully understanding) and when I turned the ipod so my fingers shadow overlapped the arrow, it had the "north" direction pointing almost completely opposite of North. Is it supposed to recognize your global position? (kind of important if it intends to direct you with the shadow of your finger)
